Born in Wellington, Shropshire, and joined the Grenadier Guards in 1890 aged 16. Four years later he transferred to the Scots Guards and was awarded a medal for bravery at W. Herbergen during the Boer war. His obituary states that he was mentioned in despatches at Wittebergen, also during the Boer War.
He stood guard for two sovereigns Victoria and Edward V11 at their lying in state. In 1914 he was recruiting Sergeant for the 15th Royal Warwickshire at Bromsgrove and went to Sutton Coldfield to train the 1st & 2nd battalions. He was wounded in action and invalided out. The whole of the 1st battallion was wiped out at Ypres.
I have been unable to find a record of his mention in despatches, or any other information about his Boer War service,on any Boer War site. Can anyone help? I have, however, found medal cards for his WW1 service.
Many thanks
