| Fox | Robert Fanshawe | | Major | FOX, ROBERT FANSHAWE, Major, was born 29 November 1862, son of William Fox, of Adbury, Berkshire. He was gazetted to the Royal Artillery 1 October 1882; was promoted Captain 4 November 1891, and Major 3 February 1900. Major Fox served in the South African War, 1899-1900, and was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including operations of 17 to 24 January 1900, and action at Spion Kop; operations of 5 to 7 February 1900, and action at Vaal Kranz; operations on Tugela Heights (14 to 27 February), and action at Pieter's Hill; operations in Natal, March to June, 1900, including action at Laing's Nek (6 to 9 June). He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 8 February 1901 (Sir R H Buller, 30 March and 9 November 1900), and London Gazette, 10 September 1901]; received the Queen's Medal with five clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 1901]: "Robert Fanshawe Fox, Major, Royal Artillery. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented by the King 29 October 1901; the Warrant sent 24 January 1902. He became Lieutenant Colonel 5 August 1909, and Colonel 6 March 1913. During the European War he served as Brigadier General, RA, 4th Division, BEF, 8 September 1915 to 16 June 1916; Brigadier General, RA, 7th Army Corps, BEF, 8 September 1915 to 16 June 1916; Inspector of Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery (temporary) 20 July 1916 to 31 October 1917; as Brigadier General, RA, 67th Division, Home Forces, 7 November 1917 to 15 June, 1918. He was mentioned in Despatches, and created a CB in 1915.
