Morning Neville,
Were these photographs published at the time in the various periodical and magazines of the day?
Thanks again Frank

Frank,

These are the original 6 x 8-inch prints that were sold in their thousands to battlefield tourists shortly after the war. I don't believe I have seen either of these in publications of the time.

Below are a couple of attempts at locating the grave you are interested in in relation to the current memorial garden (white arrow & circle). Unfortunately, the present layout does not reflect the shape or dimensions of the original graveyard, which extended some distance beyond the north-eastern boundary we see today. So, the results are very approximate.

A series of dark linear marks (near the red cross in the second image) show the locations of four or five deep cuts, obeying the orientation of the long trenches which were used instead of individual graves when death rates soared during the later stages of the siege. Areas of shallow earth have become parched, while the deeper, disturbed soil has retained enough moisture for the grass to remain verdant.

Note that all the present grave stones are facing southwest, whereas they originally faced northeast.

I will see if David can move this series of posts to the Intombi thread.

Hello Neville,
Okay, I just wondered, I seen the odd examples of similar stereoview type images published by Underwood, but, not these particular photographs before, but, to be quite honest, it is not something that I have actually ever looked for,
Regards Frank
