From City Coins 74, December 2024.

O'Okiep medal, bronze ( S. Reuter)

Described as:

Confirmed on Medal Roll.

The British medal issuing authorities were so determined in ruling through and deleting Reuter’s name on the medal roll provided to them that Brian Kieran, the O’kiep historian and author of the definitive Medal Roll and book “O’kiep” could not decipher his name correctly mistakenly recording him as “600 Pte. Renten, J - Called out for active military duty”. With the assistance of the computer’s magnification button in examining the high definition scan of the original medal roll available online via the Ancestry Web Site it is evident that the name “S. Reuter” is correct. Reuter, a coloured man, was denied a QSA medal by the British. However , he was presented with a bronze medal by the grateful O’kiep Cape Copper Company.
