Morning Neville
Thanks for this. Creates more questions than answers.
All the men I have mentioned are shown on the 'usual' medal rolls for the Northumberland Fusiliers under their respective NF
numbers.
6243 Cogger who was killed at Belmont
6218 Balsdon or Bolsdon - wounded
6229 Cakehead also wounded as well as
6247 Michie or Mitchie.
My initial suspicion was that Pte Michie had transferred later in the war but as I say, in the casualty
lists dated December 1899 they are shown as South African Reserve.
Without establishing exactly what that unit was it will be difficult to understand why so early in the war
they should be shown as belonging to it whilst still shown as being NF men.
I love the research element more than the medals themselves but sometimes it send you bananas!
Thanks again
Chris

This article might shed some light on what is going on here.

Private Smith is described as "Private G. Smith, No. 3, South African Reserves, Imperial Mounted Infantry, 5th Northumberland Fusiliers".

However, the shoulder title shown in the drawing appears to be that of the King's Royal Rifles. He notes that "I am not with my old regiment".
