"At the March Post while we were waiting in the Market Square, I had a long talk with Johnny Stansfeld in the Gordon Highlanders who was my Under Officer at Sandhurst. I was awfully glad to see him and heard news of a lot of old pals, amongst others he had dined with Walter and told me that he gathered from what he said that he was anxious to exchange and found out that the Dorsets are not the Rifle Brigade."

I have found a group photo of members (leaders and officers?) of the NVAC. Possibly from February 1900 as it corresponds to diary entries around the paying off. What would be the best location to post it, and what about watermarking?
Thank you
Edward

Edward, not sure what you are asking- can you clarify?
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Hi Edward,

You are welcome to post the photo here or on this one started by Brett:

I’m sure you are aware; the following were mentioned in Sir Redvers Buller's despatches:

Volunteer Ambulance Corps: Major H. Wright, Gordon Highlanders; Capt. Lord R. Manners, K.R.R.C.; Lieut. E. Baker, Manchester Regiment; Lieut. C. Findlay, 2nd Lieuts J. Stansfield and P. Stewart, Gordon Highlanders.

I’m not sure about the watermark question to protect the use of the photo; maybe someone else can answer that question.

Your great grandfathers letters did answer a question that I had; it looks like the intention was always to disband the NVAC from the start and it was only ever temporary.

Thanks.

Regards,
Shaun

Hi Edward,

I am really enjoying reading Johns letters on Substack; he wrote so authentically that it’s like been transported in time.

From this mornings letter it was interesting to hear of the battle of Belfast and the account of the gallant stand by the ZARPS.

A few years ago Neville posted some poignant photographs from the album of Captain Cecil Macready, 2nd Bn. Gordon Highlanders. If I’m correct that’s your great grandfathers commanding officer.

If Macready didn’t carry a camera then I wonder if it was your great grandfather who took the pictures? Just a thought.

One of my hobbies is to also collect and research medals to both sides of the war.

Here are two casualty combatants from that battle:
