There was a Christian Michiel Bakkes who was a PoW at Diyatalawa. Would this be your chap?

Rob, are you sure C.M. Bakkes was a commandant? He is not mentioned in Die Helde Album which would be a first for a burger of that rank.

Everhard, you are absolutely right. In fact I am humbled to report Cmdt C M Bakkes was a military historian and his rank post-dates the South African War by some time... thanks for putting me straight. ROB
